The human figure is very overt in the works of Lalu Syaukani, who insists that the core of Sasak culture is crystallized in the word ‘silaturahmi’. Derived from the Arab language, it literary means ‘to make a visit in a friendly gesture’. Syaukani adds further: “visiting each other –friends and enemies both- is important in maintaining the spirit of brotherhood”. Many kinds of feasts and ceremonies are carried out within the tradition of Sasak in order to fulfill this gesture of visiting each other. It is for the same reason of ‘silaturahmi’, that performances are created. This is also an important way of maintaining understanding and control through the community and the individual. Within Syaukani’s paintings, the choice of bright colors evokes both optimism and a sense of romanticism. He is a family man. One of his paintings portrays the traditional ‘Nyonkolan’ festival, where people are depicted astride tiger-horse-like wooden animals. In some of his paintings, we see groups of people congregating together, engendering a sense of community and togetherness.
The spirit of Lombok one can sense differs from the other Indonesian islands, you can find in the works of Lalu Syaukani.
